World food prices: the FAO index rises again in September

The FAO Food Price Index reached 136.0 points in September 2026, up 1.5% on the month, driven by cereals and sugar.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) released its monthly food price index on 2 October 2026. It stood at 136.0 points in September, 1.5% above August and 5.8% higher than a year earlier, while remaining 15.1% below its March 2022 peak.

Cereals (+5.1% on the month) and sugar (+6.1%) account for most of the increase. FAO points to logistical constraints in the Black Sea region, dry weather in parts of North America and heavy rains disrupting the harvest in Brazil’s Centre-South. Vegetable oils edged up, meat fell by 1.1% and dairy was almost unchanged.

Outlook, limits and risks

The index tracks international commodity prices, not retail prices or the profitability of a farming project. It is revised every month and remains highly sensitive to weather, logistics and geopolitics.
